Arangetram

At Padanyaas, we believe that the Arangetram is an essential part of a Bharatanatyam student’s journey. It is a culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and practice, and it marks the student’s entry into the professional world of dance

ABOUT ARANGETRAM

Arangetram is a traditional rite of passage in the Bharatnatyam dance form, which marks a student’s debut solo performance on stage. It is a Tamil word that means “ascending the stage” and is considered a significant milestone in a student’s Bharatnatyam journey.

Arangetram is typically held after several years of rigorous training in Bharatnatyam. The student must master various aspects of the dance form, including the Adavus (basic steps), Abhinaya (facial expressions), and Nritta (pure dance). The student must also have a good understanding of the music, rhythm, and lyrics of the compositions they will be performing

During Arangetram, the student performs a full-length Bharatnatyam recital, which typically lasts for two to three hours. The performance includes a variety of items, such as Alarippu, Jathiswaram, Shabdam, Varnam, and Tillana. The performance is accompanied by live music, with a team of musicians playing the mridangam, violin, flute, and vocals.

Arangetram is not just a solo performance but also a celebration of the student’s hard work and dedication. It is typically attended by family, friends, teachers, and members of the dance community. It is a momentous occasion that is often marked by gifts, blessings, and felicitations.
